Best Areas of Koh Samui to Rent a Villa: Where to Stay

7 min read

Koh Samui is small, but its areas differ more than the Instagram photos suggest. The beach, evening noise levels, distance from the airport, cafés within walking distance — all of it shapes how the trip actually feels. Here's a rundown of the five areas where villas get booked most.

Chaweng — if you want things happening

The island's longest beach (around 7 km), the largest concentration of restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance, and the busiest nightlife. A solid choice if you don't want to book a taxi every time you want dinner off-villa. The downside: the central strip can be loud at night, so for a quieter stay look at villas set back from the main road.

Bophut (Fisherman's Village) — character and restaurants

An old fishing village with wooden shophouses, restaurants and cafés along the waterfront, plus a Friday night market. Calmer than Chaweng, with everything you need nearby. Works well for couples and anyone who values atmosphere over club life.

Maenam — the best pick for families with kids

A six-kilometre beach with shallow, calm water — exactly what you want with young children. The area is quieter and more spread out, with more villas sitting on larger plots with their own garden. The infrastructure is lighter than Chaweng's, but a five-to-ten-minute drive covers that.

Choeng Mon — close to the airport, quiet and upscale

A compact bay on the northeast coast, a beautiful beach, and relatively few tourists. One of the most convenient areas logistically — 10–15 minutes from the airport, yet a short drive from Chaweng and Bophut. This is where you'll find the highest concentration of premium villas.

Lamai — the same, for less

The island's second-largest beach, with infrastructure similar to Chaweng but priced noticeably lower — often 20–30% less. A good option if you want a developed area without paying a premium for its more famous neighbour.

Quick pick guide

  • First trip, want it all within reach — Chaweng
  • Family with kids — Maenam
  • Romance and good restaurants — Bophut
  • Premium stay, close to the airport — Choeng Mon
  • Same level, smaller budget — Lamai
